According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are-wait wrong bee movie sorry. Jason Statham, yes The Meg guy, has a new movie out. It’s about Beekeepers. No, this is not a documentary about their history. It is about a “secret” spy group called Beekeepers. Think of it like the other hundreds of secret government programs that just so happen to all have Diet Jason Bourne.
The most important part of any action movie is the action itself. While this movie is no John Wick, not many are to be fair, it still has solid action. There are some scenes that stood out, like the elevator, nuff said, and the hall of mirrors fight. The biggest problem the action had was that some of the fights were a little too dark to really see what was happening. For the most part though, everything looked great.
The dialogue, on the other hand, was both terrible and awesome at the same time. Pretty much every action movie has terrible dialogue, rough plots, and overall mediocre characters. This one fits right one for the most part. There are two exceptions: Jason Statham, for obvious reasons, and Josh Hutcherson. I liked him mostly because it was just really funny seeing Pita from the Hunger Games just be an awful person. He’s an ok antagonist, but man is he just funny like that. It’s like watching an evil Caillou…ok an eviler Caillou.
What might be the best part of this whole movie is the dialogue. While you have most of the usual action movie beats, there is one thing in particular this one has over other popcorn flicks. The. Puns. There are so many bee puns, that I can’t tell if they’re actually funny or I’m just going crazy. The ridiculousness of trying to call a one-man army a “Beekeeper” with a straight face is funny enough. Adding all the puns and making the driving force of the movie about bee patterns, just adds to it! I honestly have trouble hearing bees or beekeeper the same after this movie. It’s a hard left turn from the other bee movie.
This is still just a popcorn flick. It is not going to change your life, other than the beekeeper thing, and it isn’t going to be the best movie ever. That does not mean that it can’t be a fun ride. There is still plenty to be entertained with in this movie. I would have to say that this is one of Jason Statham’s best movies. Although considering recent Fast and Furious movies, that may not be such a glowing compliment.
