DC is in a weird position right now. They are in the middle of completely rebooting their movie universe. This puts a lot of DC’s current projects in a bad place. Some of them might not even matter in the new reboot. Now no one is quite sure what does and does not matter. That helped lead to Shazam 2 flopping. But one film seemed like it might matter a lot…The Flash. This was going to be the big introduction to the reboot. Sadly, it still left a lot of questions.
I want to get one thing out of the way first, the CGI. It is now as bad as so many people say. Yes, there are some moments. Like at the beginning where some babies looked like cabbage patch dolls, and yes, some of the Chrono Bowl stuff looks rough. But, the rest looks pretty good. Pretty much everything for Supergirl, Zod, and the Flash(s) looks good. Not like a recent Marvel movie like some people make it out to be.
The story, while a little poorly paced, is good as well. They spend quite a bit of time just setting up the main plot. Although we do get to see the Flash out a baby in a microwave. That still lives rent free in my head. But then the movie starts to get going. And then we rush through the finale. They go off to fight Zod, and we just rush to the end.
There is one glaring flaw to this movie. And no it’s not just Ezra Miller. Big spoiler alert here. So, since this is a multiverse movie, like every other movie now, there are some cameos. Some of these cameos are cool, like Nic Cage getting his chance to play Superman, or George Clooney coming back as Batman. But some of these are in much poorer taste.
The film also used CGI to recreate certain actors. They brought back George and Christopher Reeve’s Supermen. They brought back Adam West’s Batman too. And they don’t even look like they’re actually there. They looked like they were photoshopped in. These are actors that passed away decades ago, and they felt the need to do this! They could’ve had Christian Bale make a cameo. Or have the CW Flash and Superman show up. But no, this was apparently the better option.
This film was plagued with controversy and obstacles. Between the star’s numerous problems, getting a new director every few years, and taking so long to come out, that the Flash show started when it was announced and ended when it released. I’m not joking, it was THAT long. But, it was still an ok film. It was very unfortunate that this movie flopped the way that it did. Especially since a good chunk of the budget was just getting George Clooney.
