The Student Senate, with help from Campus Ministry International, is giving bread and other bakery products away for free to the ARCC community under the grand staircase from 10 a.m. to noon every Monday.
Early Monday morning, Dan Wiegel of the charity Feed the Need travels to the Brownberry bakery distribution center in Minneapolis, collecting bread products that are approaching their sell-by date.
Although these products are still good for several days after their sell-by date, many grocery stores must dispose of them anyway if they have not yet been sold. With the free bread program, however, the bread can be brought to Anoka-Ramsey, with no extra cost to the school, and can find its way onto the tables of those who need it.
The array of bread products to choose from is quite vast. From white to whole-grain to potato to rye, almost every type of bread imaginable is represented. The program also specializes in other wheat and bakery products, such as several varieties of hot dog and hamburger buns. For those with a sweet-tooth, there is also a selection of treats such as donuts and pound cake available.
The program was started last year at Anoka Tech and was so successful that it is being expanded to Anoka-Ramsey and hosted by the Student Senate.
In the first week of the program alone, 420 students and staff stopped by to pick up some free bread. This program will run all year and will happen every Monday unless unforeseen conditions, such as weather, prevent it.
