The vampire diaries are a show that started in 2009 and consists of eight seasons. This show highlights the life of a girl named Elena Gilbert and her friends. It also highlights two brothers who are the vampires in the show. When thinking about the top three shows, in my opinion The Vampire Diaries is a close second to Gossip Girl. Although this take may be controversial for some, if you are all about drama in shows this is definitely a show that will align with your interests. When watching this show it instantly got me hooked and wanting to know more about not only what is going to happen later on in the show, but also what has happened in the past for these characters to be who they are today.
In the beginning of the show the main character Elena Gilbert falls quickly in love with Stefan, one of the two brothers who are vampires. But at first, she had no idea of his background and what he really was, being a vampire. Throughout the show you watch their love story, but a huge plot twist is soon to come. I think the biggest plot twist that happened in the show, roughly in season four, Elena starts to fall for Damon which happens to be Stefans’s brother. In the show this has happened before in history where a girl has been in love with both brothers, only Elena chose Damon.
Not only does is this show in the drama genre, but it also has fantasy and mystery elements to it making it more intriguing for the audience watching it. It has the perfect balance between real life and things that teenagers experience and live through, along with the life of vampires, witches, and werewolves living among them. Things like teen drug addiction, loss of family members young, relationship drama, and the ups and downs of high school are greatly highlighted throughout the show. This is a show geared towards teenagers but as for the television rating it is a TV-14 show, some of the content that it contains could be too much for younger viewers. It has some intense themes, but I will not spoil too much of the show as you will need to watch it for yourself to get a feel for not only why it is rated TV-14 but also why I think the show is an essential must watch.
You can find this show on HBO Max as it got removed from the Netflix streaming service not too long ago. From what I have seen and heard, The Vampire Diaries is quite a popular show amongst teenagers, and this is how I originally heard about it and started the series. You know when you rewatch a show or movie and each time you wish you could watch it again for the first time just so you get that element of surprise again, that is how I feel about this show. Although this show is a longer one, especially because the episodes are about 40 minutes long, it is definitely worth watching and spending the time to watch it. Overall If I were to rate this show on a 5-star scale, I would have to give it a 4.8 rating, but you should for sure give it a watch and see how it plays out on your own scale!
