A new club on the Coon Rapids campus hopes students will take “green” action

This semester, Anoka-Ramsey’s Sustainability Club was established on the Coon Rapids campus.

The club started after substantial interest in sustainability was generated following the formation of a staff Sustainability Committee co-chaired by geography instructor Victoria Downey.

The staff Sustainability Committee has a similar interest in promoting sustainability on campus. Student Samantha Weiss heard about Downey’s involvement in the staff committee and was interested in a student group with similar interests.

Downey is the Sustainability Club’s faculty adviser with Weiss serving as student president. The Sustainability Club hopes to encourage Anoka-Ramsey students to take actions on campus as well as in their lives that are more sustainable to the environment.

The club holds meetings and provides information for students to “green their lifestyle,” live a more sustainable lifestyle at home, as well as to encourage and enact sustainable activities on campus.

The club plans on working with the staff Sustainability Committee to develop plans to encourage sustainability.

The club also wants to host workshops to teach means to enhance sustainability such as how to make homemade laundry detergent that is better for the environment.

Club members also hope to become “recycling goalies” to encourage better recycling on campus.

The club plans on attending St. Paul’s March for Science on Earth Day, April 22, to show concern about potential governmental efforts to cut support for science, engineering, and higher education.

If you are interested in joining the Sustainability Club, you can contact the club advisor Victoria Downey at [email protected] Or you can email club president Samantha Weiss at [email protected]
